A couple of weekends ago, myself and daughter went camping with a group to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma.
It has been a couple of years since I have been camping. Now I can't wait to go again. It was a very enjoyable experience. The Refuge is an amazing place. The mountain range is said to be one of the oldest on earth. At one time it was taller then Mt Everest. The US government created the Refuge in 1901.
In 1907, 15 Bison from the New York Zoological Society were donated. Currently the herd is kept around 600 animal.
In 1911, 5 Rocky Mountain Elk where transplanted from Wyoming. The indigenous Elk had been exterminated by the late 1800's. In 1912 another 15 Elk were brought in. Currently the elk are kept around 800 animals.
In 1927, 20 Texas Longhorns were introduced to the Refuge. These Longhorn were brought in to preserve the Longhorn from extinction in the US. Currently the Longhorns are around 280 animals.
